1854 Muckle Flugga lighthouse is built on the northern most point of the Shetland Isles

It was originally intended to guide British warships around the north of the Shetlands on their way to stations during the Crimean War (1853-56). It was conceived by David and Thomas Stevenson in 1854 and is 66 metres above sea level. In one of the fiercest seas in the northern hemisphere it was not unknown for waves to crash above the top of the lighthouse
