1998 Last manned lighthouse at Fair Isle South is automated.

The last lightkeepers in Scotland left Fair Isle South Lighthouse in Shetland in 1998.

This was a long line in tests for automation including the introduction of the first automated gas lighthouse in 1890s (although gas was not fully used accross the lighthouses until 1970s with the introduction of the Dalen Burner).

The NLB is still working to be at the forfront of technology, introducing solar power in the 1990s.
