Lightkeepers Duties 1973

The tower stairs, passages, Engine and Radio rooms, stores, doors, windows, paths, lawn grounds, etc., are to be cleaned and tidied whenever considered necessary by the Principal Lightkeeper. Cleaning should normally begin not later than 9 a.am. during the months March to September inclusive, and not later than 10 a.m. during the other months of the year.

The daily routine cleaning as described above should be as a general rule be confined to an average period of two hours. At Three-man Stations the Lightkeeper coming off watch at 6 a.m. need not normally participate in the above cleaning work during that morning throughout the year. At Two-man Stations, the Lightkeeper coming off watch at 6 a.m. may be excused cleaning work during the winter period only. For certain seasonal work such as limewashing and painting which needs to be done while fine weather lasts or where there may be a risk to personnel when working short-handed, the Principal Lightkeeper has full discretion to call upon the morning watchman if required.

B.3. EFFICIENCY OF LIGHT. - Constant vigilance and strict attention to all the details of Lightroom duty are required of Lightkeepers in order that the light may be kept at a its maximum efficiency. The ventilation should be carefully regulated to prevent condensation on lantern panes. If the lantern panes become obscured to spray, snow or any other cause they should be cleaned as soon as possible.

A spare lamp, vaporiser and mantle complete is to be kept ready for immediate use when necessary. Where the navigation light is electric, defective electric lamps are to be replaces immediately, unless otherwise instructed.
